Back in the mid-noughties someone set up a Wikipedia page (an academic stub) about me - I still have no idea who did this. I stuck to the ethical principle of not adding to or otherwise editing it. Eventually some of my students found it and started adding "facts" - I was a Pokemon card collector, a breakdance champion etc. Ultimately it was deleted with (I think) the caption "No noteworthy achievements" - one of my regrets is not getting a screengrab of that justification.

Best wishes
Chris

Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Wikipedia-article writer wanted

Wikipedia regularly reviews and deletes pages in accordance with their very extensive guidelines. It is likely that the page didn’t pass one or more of the tests that allow Wikipedia to consider it note-worthy. They don’t like you to edit your own pages, partly because the information there should be obtained from secondary sources and correctly cited. This is difficult to do if you are very close to a topic. They are also very critical of anything that looks like paid content or a puff-piece. This is not what Wikipedia is for.

If you want to contribute to Wikipedia it is worth doing, but you are best to work on subjects where you have expertise to contribute, but where you are not so close that you write based on opinion. If you want to fact-check and review information on a page, the editors are usually sympathetic, but you need to keep a neutral tone.

But I am aware of (some of) the rules of Wikipedia that block me from doing this myself, not in the least that I have never contributed to any pages, so I have no "editor status" of any kind.
