medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

The Année Philologique lists one article, from 1958 (so not really recent, but that is based on a search for “Medad”):

Seitz, O. J. F. “Afterthoughts on the term dipsychos.” New Testament Studies, 4 (1958): 327-334.

The AP lists 55 hits on the “Shepherd of Hermas”.

On the Book of Eldad & Modad (or Medad) see:

"The Lost Apocrypha of the Old Testament: their Titles and Fragments", Collected, Translated and Discussed by Montague Rhodes James. London, SPCK, 1920, pp. 38-40. James suggests it was a short book of 400 lines, the only certain fragment of which is in Hermas. He summarises what the Midrashim and Targums say about the two - including the fact that they were half-brothers of Moses. In Numbers 11 when Moses took the seventy elders to meet the Lord and they prophesied, Eldad and Medad remained in the camp but the spirit also came upon them and they prophesied.

Bishop Lightfoot suggested that a passage in I Clement. may be from the Book of Eldad and Medad, but M R James gives good reasons why that is unlikely (The passage in I Clement resembles 2 Peter, iii.4 etc, as James points out.

A quick search of the Patrologia Latina Database showed 15 references to Medad, mostly in Jerome & texts attributed to him. Also Isidore of Sevile, Ruper of Deutz & Petrus Comestor. Place to starr.

Dear List Members
Can some kind colleague(s) point me, please, in the direction of current or recent work on the Shepherd of Hermas, and more specifically (though this may be a long shot) on the now lost 'Book of Eldad and Modad' which is the only actual book mentioned by the author.
Thanks to search engines I'm aware that Jewish writers down the centuries were, and continue to be interested in the OT characters Eldad and Medad and their appearance in Numbers 11. I'm also keen to know if the same was true of Christian writers, and if so, what discourse there may have been on the topic between writers in the two traditions.
Kind regards to all from lockdown Oxford, where we now breathe clean air, walk clean streets, and hear birdsong, at the expense of young people's education and job prospects.
Graham
