Dear all,

I am forwarding a message about a forthcoming anthology of Russian poetry from World War Two.  I have read parts of this anthology in draft and I think it is extremely good - and ground-breaking!

Smokestack Books has received little support from official bodies of any kind - so I do whole-heartedly encourage people to subscribe  for this.  (It does, by the way, offer extraordinarily good value for a bilingual publication!)

All the best,   Robert

Dear Comrades,

On 1 August Smokestack is publishing Russia is Burning: Poems of the Great Patriotic War, a 500pp anthology edited and translated by Maria Bloshteyn.

Russia is Burning brings together for the first time in Russian and English over fifty poets, including Boris Slutsky, Boris Pasternak, Olga Berggoltz, Samuel Marshak, Alexander Tvardovsky, Evgeny Vinokurov, Vsevolod Nekrasov, Konstantin Simonov, Bulat Okudzhava, Vladimir Vysotsky, Anna Akhmatova and Ilya Ehrenburg. It includes poems written by soldiers on the front-line and by civilians in the Leningrad blockade, by émigré poets, by prisoners of war and by Gulag prisoners, by poets who wrote ‘for the drawer’ and by writers who later tried to understand the war and its long-term effects on Russian society. Russia is Burning is a testimony to the power of poetry to resist Fascism and to the extraordinary heroism and endurance of the Soviet people in the war against Nazi Germany.

Russia is Burning promises to the biggest book that Smokestack has yet published, as well as one of the most important. It is also going to be the most expensive to print.

You are invited therefore to become one of the book’s subscribers (your name will appear inside the book). Russia is Burning will sell in the shops at £13.99; subscribers will receive a copy at 30% discount – ie £10 (p&p free). If you wish to become a subscriber, simply print and complete this form and send it with a cheque (payable to ‘Smokestack Books’) to 1 Lake Terrace, Grewelthorpe, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 3BU, or let me know by e-mail ([log in to unmask]) by 1 June.

I wish to subscribe to Russia is Burning (ISBN 9781916012110).
