I can’t remember how much detail I gave you, but we have a team of Mental Health First Aiders who can be called out for students in
crisis – e.g. panic attacks, mental distress. They would take them aside and help them calm down and do any further signposting as necessary or refer the student to the Mental health Adviser.

Subject: Re: Guidance on supporting students having panic attacks during remote sessions
Thanks for your replies Heather and Kathy. I quite like the idea of having a separate area on Teams for students to speak with someone
if needed.
I wonder if you have any suggestion on what could be done if during the panic attack, the student then went onto need medical attention?
E.g. how to handle the rest of the group while someone calls 999? How to ensure the correct address or location of student is identified? Who should liaise with emergency services, etc?
Kind regards,
Fozya

We also have a separate area for students to speak with someone if needed via MS TEAMs
Kind regards

Would it be helpful to just suggest they leave the session for a few minutes and give them some breathing exercises to do before rejoining
the session. And also suggest who they can contact for further help.

Good evening,
Hope you are all well and keeping safe.
I wondered if you have any guidance on
how teaching staff can supporting students having a panic attack during a teaching session taking place remotely? Do you have any specific protocols in place? I have put together a guide for one-to-one remote sessions but I’m a little stuck on how it
would work during a class of approx. 60 other students!
Would really appreciate any advice you could give me.
Many thanks in advance,
Fozya
