Apologies for cross-posting:

The search for film/video/entertainment resources has resulted in impressive abundance. So much that it seemed worth developing themed playlists, using our knowledge and expertise to guide people with a homemade programme or festival along with some film notes for guidance. Consider this open to teaching, homeschool, or simple distraction.

I asked the department (staff and PhDs) and they delivered. The roll out begins with:

Embodying Capitalism and its Abuses (Leshu Torchin)

Surviving Social Distance (Cassice Last)

A Self-Isolator’s Silent Film Festival (Patrick ‘Paddy’ Adamson)

Women and Documentary: Naomi Kawase Online (Dina Iordanova)

The next weeks will offer suggestions from: visiting scholar Kai Gao (Disease and Contemporary Chinese Cinema); PhD student Fernanda Puga (Ecuadoran film online); St Andrews alumnus and current documentary programmer for Edinburgh International Film Festival, Rohan Crickmar (Complicating the Real- Documentary in the 21st Century); a screening programme from Cultures of Resistance Films; and more from me (The Female Gaze).

II also welcome your contributions, which would all become available in one glance at https://screenculture.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/category/media-playlists/

Please do feel free to share this resource and if you can think of anyone who would like to participate, ask them and have them contact me.

The cancellation of film and media events everywhere is a gutting effect of the pandemic. I hope this project can continue to provide us not only with the cinema and media arts, but also with a reminder of why they are significant always. And if it boosts the signal for artists and venues, so much the better.

Be well,

Leshu
