Dear Martina,

Ah, the implication regarding my maps had somehow slipped my mind at this late hour of the night in the Americas. Thank you very much for that, and for your kind words about the project. I am seeking to also show on the map controls such as the ones you describe in Slovenia - they would be in yellow rather than in red. Though I've gone to some effort to search out information on such controls, it was inevitable that I would miss some. I'll take a look at the sources and plan one correcting the map in the next update I do.

(Continuing to copy this correspondence to the whole INT-BOUNDARIES list, as Martina's correction may be of interest to others who have looked at my maps.)

All the best,

Dear Evan,

Hi, sincere apologizes for the problems in posting this e-mail a few minutes ago....

Thanks, Evan,  for this nice illustration and greetings from Slovenia.

Just to add that Slovenia has introduced temporary restrictions on the borders, too. Here's a press release of the Government PR&media office on a measure with Italy from March 11 2020 (https://www.gov.si/en/news/2020-03-11-government-adopts-decision-to-implement-border-control-checks-for-travellers-between-italy-and-slovenia/). There are more official and media reports on this, you just have to google them. Or you can check with the Slovenian Ministry of Interior.

I understand you are including in your map only restrictions notified to the EU, so it might well be that the measures have not been promptly notified as the government offices and delegations are functioning in the limited capacity in these days. I would guess that also some other countries might have introduced additional health checks/certificates/declarations, but are not currently listed in the EU official lists (https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/schengen/reintroduction-border-control_en).

Thanks again, and best wishes for your great project!

Greetings from Šempeter pri Gorici - a border town between Slovenia and Italy, where today we a wonderful sunny day!

P.S.: I wanted to attach some photos on current state/mood in the near towns of Nova Gorica (SI) and Gorizia (IT); as you know, this has always been a very busy cross-border area, even in times of harsh East-West tensions... ; but apparently something went wrong in posting of the attachments

Dear Roman, and others interested in this topic,

I haven't seen any detailed research on this yet, but I have been doing some basic chronicling and illustrative mapping of "temporary reintroduction of border control" declarations within Europe's Schengen Area during the crisis, which can be seen at the following two links:

Dear border enthusiasts,

With the current Covid-19 crisis, we’ve seen countries take unprecedented measures and instinctively shut their borders “in the public interest” or “the greater good”. Few have since asked whether border closures make sense when the virus is on both sides of it anyway, and it’s unclear as to when and how borders will be re-opened.

Since the pandemic won’t go away any time soon, questions around Covid-19 will continue to impact our work, and we need to adjust our activities in that sense. I’d therefore be interested to hear if anyone has already done any research or has any experience on

  • International borders and Corona, Ebola, other epidemics or any health service related issues at borders / border posts?
  • The effect of border closures (for any reason) on local population, e.g. villages, small scale cross-border traders

Any thoughts, ideas, academic or not, with papers or not, are very welcome!

(Our work is focused on Africa, but I’m interested in experiences from around the globe)

Thanks and stay healthy everyone!

Roman
