Dear All,

Just to let you know, the Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems Seminar that was supposed to be given this week (30th of April 2020) by Victor Beresnevich from the University of York has been postponed. The new date of Victor's seminar is still to be confirmed.

The ETDS Seminar will be back next week (7th May) with a talk by Tanja Schindler (Pisa).

However, let me also take this opportunity to remind you that there *is* still an Analysis and Geometry Seminar today, details copied below.

Best wishes,
Demi

Dear all,

The next Analysis & Geometry seminar will be at 3:15pm on Thursday 30th
April by Michael Levitin (Reading).  The title is "Direct and inverse
Steklov eigenvalue problem in curvilinear polygons" (abstract below).

You can join the meeting via web browser by the following link:

The meeting ID, participant passcode, and alternative ways to connect
are given below after the abstract.

We will open the meeting around ten minutes early to give people a
chance to join, and keep it open afterwards for discussion for a little
while.

Best regards,

Asma, John, Kevin, Michiel

Abstract:

I will discuss sharp asymptotics of large Steklov eigenvalues for planar
curvilinear polygons. The asymptotic expressions for eigenvalues are
given in terms of roots of some trigonometric polynomials which depend
explicitly on the side lengths and angles of the polygon.
Both the eigenvalue asymptotics and the corresponding quasimodes depend
non-trivially on the arithmetic properties of the angles of the polygon,
and are also related to the eigenvalues of a particular quantum graph.
The proofs involve some classical hydrodynamics results related to a
sloping beach problem, and a sloshing problem. I’ll also discuss the
inverse Steklov problem and state some open questions. The talk will be
based on joint works with Leonid Parnovski, Iosif Polterovich, and David
Sher, see arXiv:1908.06455 and arXiv:1709.01891, and also with Stanislav
Krymski, in preparation.
