Calling all chemists! I'm having to dredge up latent skills to cope with the demand from people desperate to know how best to protect their workforce whilst still having to do their daily tasks.
How to explain:
1/ antimicrobial vs antibacterial
2/ why for surfaces, soapy water dried off and followed by bleach is as good as anything
3/ sodium hypochlorite vs benzalkonium chloride
4/ why concentration is important
Also we have health professionals desperate for hand sanitiser looking for local industries to provide ingredients. Do you have any experience of firms willing to help out wherever you are?
If ever there was a need for good science communication it is now. Trying to wade through science literature to get to simple accessible information is a nightmare.
I want to be able to say
This is a virus this is a bacterium and this is how they differ
Why it lives outside the body and how long for
This is why we use soap and water
Why we can't kill it
Why it doesn't carry on living in water after we've washed it down the sink.
How does bleach work?
How do hand sanitiser gels/spray work?
Quite happy to work on the answers to these if anyone wants to join me.
Keep safe and well.
Katy
