Dear Victor, In your post on Covid-19, you wrote “I have not found one trustworthy single source of information.” If you are looking for reliable news on scientific, political, and economic issues, here are three good sources: The World Health Organization maintains a trustworthy global web site, Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Pandemic at URL: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019 The Guardian has superb coverage. Because it is a newspaper with main editorial offices in Great Britain and Australia, there is a heavy focus on the UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia, but this is — in my view — the world’s best international newspaper. The Guardian is published on an open access web site, supported by a not-for-profit foundation the welcomes donors who subscribe on a voluntary basis. (Disclosure: I am a donor.) https://www.theguardian.com/international The New York Times is making news and information on the coronavirus outbreak available free. You can getting by going to their page titled The Coronavirus Outbreak and signing up with an email address at URL: https://www.nytimes.com/news-event/coronavirus While coverage is oriented toward the United States and North America, the coverage on scientific issues and the international coverage is well researched and accurate. If you use the search engines on these different sites, you will find some articles with information on designing and making supplies. While the information is reliable, there are different and often conflicting regulations on equipment in different jurisdictions. In Sweden, for example, we have a large supply of safe, high quality face masks for hospital staff that we are no longer permitted to use because these masks no longer conform to current European Union regulations. As a result, the government keeps the masks in storage even while hospital staff suffer from a shortage of protective equipment. Apparently, no one in the current Swedish government has considered suspending the regulations, either by applying to the EU or by passing a national law in Riksdag that explicitly declares emergency use permissible. It is necessary to determine applicable regulations (and possible waivers) on a local, regional, and national basis in each jurisdiction. There are several design initiatives under way that are oriented toward future solutions. Some, like the World Design Organisation initiative in collaboration with the IBM Corporate Service Corps and Design for America have elicited such strong response that they no longer accept new participants. It would be useful if someone were to gather a list of responsible, current sources of information useful to designers and post it to this list with links. In suggesting this, I am not asking for several dozen one-off links posted in reply to this note. I am asking that someone with appropriate expertise do a careful search, vet each site carefully for reliability and currency, prepare a reasonable list with current links, and post it. I suspect this will take a couple days of work — it would be a great service. In the meantime, those who seek trustworthy news and information on health, science, economics, and public policy related to the Covid-19 pandemic will find it at the World Health Organization, the Guardian, and the New York Times.
