Hello,

Just to share our thoughts. We have six cohorts of 16 students in each for one clinical based education unit over the summer term. We plan to deliver online teaching asynchronous via Sway and One Note or Slack (undecided) and give all 6 cohorts a single submission point for the assignment. This will be mid August to try and offer flexibility for our students with clinical commitments.
Just wondering how we monitor student registration so we can invoice them for the unit costs? We can’t wait to invoice them until they submit the assignment apparently which would be easier.
Also how strict are people in monitoring student engagement with online teaching?

Thanks
Annie

Dear Helen

Absolutely – we need to consult the students. I’m just trying to narrow down the proposals that we put to them, as there may be umpteen different permutations of what works for different people! That’s why I like your super-flexible assignment submission model.

I will probably go to the students with the offer of a ‘long, thin’ module, starting as scheduled, or a delayed start, to see what they think. Like you, we are keen to avoid large scale interruption of study, so we will have to do whatever we can to try to help!

Hi Michael,

All our modules are blended with only 3-4 face-to-face sessions so it is not a massive leap for us to convert them to fully on-line (which is taking a bit of creativity as I can’t re-create the role plays online)!

Our current modules started in Feb, so at least we have had some face-to-face contact and have got everyone up and running with their online learning. Our next intakes are due to start in September, although we may need to keep that under review depending on whether clinical staff can be released for study leave. I think the needs of the students have to come first – is it possible for you to contact them to seek their views on the start dates?

Kind regards,

Helen

Dear Helen

That’s really helpful, thank you! (And thank you Jane for initiating the conversation!).

Helen – do you have any modules still running? We are about to begin our final PG Cert module, which is normally face-to-face and has been rapidly converted to online learning. I am in two minds as to whether we should start as scheduled (1 April) and run it over a much longer time than originally intended (it currently runs over 5-6 weeks, so we could run it over 10-12 instead) or just to delay the start to the summer, in the hope of us being ‘over the hump’ with Covid ad running it for 5-6 weeks in July-August.

Thoughts? Anyone?

Hi Jane,

We are offering all our clinical education students a 12-week flexi-submission period with no need to request extensions/mitigating circumstances and no late submission penalty. They can submit anytime within the 12-week window. We have some students who are in a position to do their work now (eg. they are essentially well, but self-isolating) and some students who cannot engage at all with their studies due to work commitments. We are trying to accommodate everyone, hence there is a flexi-submission rather than a blanket extension. This will be kept under review as events are so uncertain.

We are trying (where possible) to avoid having large numbers of students interrupting as this will impact on future capacity and recuitment. So, we are basically aiming to keep the majority of students on their current module by delivering it over a flexible extended period. I have no doubt we will have individual circumstances that emerge that may require a different approach, in which case our usual regs for deferral, interruption, etc., would still apply.

Hope that helps,

Kind regards,

Helen

Dear all

I don't think this is a request for sensitive information - the current crisis is affecting all of us so hopefully it won't be regarded as such.

Can I ask what others are doing to adapt their academic regs - or work within them - to give students the flexibility they'll need over the coming weeks and months?

At Plymouth, we are currently being told that all students will be automatically granted extenuating circumstances for a limited period but (given the fact that students on our PG programmes are almost all healthcare professionals on the front line), we're pressing to go further. Understandably, some are already requesting longer term interruption/suspension of study, and as Programme Leads we're seeking assurances that they will not be disadvantaged financially or academically for doing so.

We are also concerned about our IcD students, some of whom will be working on projects where it is now difficult to collect data etc. How are their needs being accommodated at this difficult time?

As we all know, finding out what's happening elsewhere can sometimes help in securing the leverage needed to get things done. Any info on what others are doing to flex their systems would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes

Jane
