Hi Victoria,
We trialled this last summer. The supplier we used were very explicit in saying this data was being captured at the time of the visitors connecting to the Wi-Fi. However some systems do map the journey of visitors
who haven’t signed up, but as this is anonymous data it doesn’t have any GDPR implications.
Thanks

Hi Vikki
This has big privacy implications – we would certainly need to inform if not explicitly ask permission to do this. As we are only just getting folk used to free wifi I don’t want to look like
we are only giving wifi in exchange for this data.
I think I would prefer to do this as a short period test perhaps over a week or weekend with high transparency and possibly with an incentive for visitors… only if we are really sure it’s going
to give us information we want and actually find useful would I consider this beyond a limited test.

Subject: Mapping physical journeys through Wi-Fi
Hi all,
A question here regarding mapping the physical journey of visitors around our site. We are considering monitoring this via our Wi-Fi portal, so when visitors login, we can determine where is most popular / busy during certain points in
the day. Has anyone used this method, and if so, did you need to ask permissions to map their journey and use this data? Just wondering on what level of transparency we need to provide.
Many thanks in advance,
Victoria Jenner
