Essex Record Office, Wharf Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 6YT.
26th - 27th March 2020

Tacketed bindings are part of the story of stationery binding and can be found in many forms in English Archive collections. When Conservators from Cumbria and Staffordshire Archive Services both discovered independently that they had fine examples of this intriguing form of binding, they set about making facsimile copies only to find remarkable similarities when compared directly with each other.

On this course you will...
Explore how tackets have been used in the construction of early stationery bindings and focus on a distinct tacketed binding style that spread across Europe from the medieval period and influenced account bindings into the 19th and 20th centuries. You will produce a book model based on examples found in English regional archives using authentic materials and techniques while considering how the separate elements of this binding contribute towards the functionality of the book and influence later stationery binding styles.

Under the guidance and teaching of...
Richard Nichols, RMARA, ACR, Senior Conservator, Staffordshire Archives
Tony King, Senior Collections Care and Conservation Manager, Durham University
Fay Humphreys, Conservator, Cumbria Archives

Please note that this is a practical workshop so some experience in bookbinding is required.
