Unfortunately, the link to the finding aid is broken on that record, Teresa.

Here's a different example - it was pointed out to me at a conference I attended on Walter Greenwood a couple of years ago. A simple permanent link to the finding aid, added to the External Links section:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Greenwood

The idea is that any other repositories which hold material related to Greenwood would also add links to their finding aids in the External Links section (as well as enhancing the main entry if possible).

I ‘created’ a house style for linking to archives, by creating it as a heading and popping the reference underneath.  It seems to have survived in the records I did at TWL.  See this entry for an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_Rowbotham

Also love Wikipedia and agree with Emma that it would be excellent if archivists could be more engaged with editing pages and sharing knowledge.

Also acknowledge that some of the Wikipedia editing rules make it difficult to add particularly links to articles. This is because (as some of you have said) editors are meant to be unbiased in their writing and part of that is not writing content related to your place of work. Adding a link to an archive collection you have in your care can often be seen as either spammy or violating that rule of not directly editing something relating to your place of work/employer.

 

Having said all of that, I was talking to the Scotland co-ordinator for Wikimedia UK, asking what kind of editing I might be able to get on with now that we're all working from home and she said that under the circumstances she'd tell me to go for it anyway, edit about things relating to my archive collections. She still recommended not throwing links in here, there and everywhere - maybe more edit the actual content of the page and add your archive collections as references to the information. She also advised that I have it clearly written on my own editor page that I was an archivist at X institution but was endeavouring to keep my editing as unbiased as possible.

 

Would happily chat more about Wikipedia off-list and can also give out the email address of the Scotland Wiki co-ordinator to any Scotland based archivists who might want to see what is and isn't possible for them - I know she would be fine with my passing along her info.

When I first raised this, I chatted with someone at Wikipedia, and they were very keen to progress it (including possibly incorporating ISAAR fields). So unlikely Wikipedia police would have been an issue.

I agree about Wikipedia, but then the beauty of using agreed global identifiers is that you enter the world of Linked Data, and then you can think about links to all sorts of things.  If you look at a VIAF page: http://viaf.org/viaf/86607236/ - you can see that there are many aliases, as well as links to wikipedia (in the About section).  The VIAF ID also links to wikidata: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q242666

Of course, we cannot be sure that the VIAF ID is the right thing to use, and it is only available for known people and organisation (though the coverage is surprisingly wide). But it still has great advantages, and it has gained traction. 

I've asked VIAF about adding names from the Archives Hub - they are interested but told me to come back later! Not sure if that is fobbing me off or just waiting until they are in a position to work with more external agencies.

NB: One problem with wikipedia that we found when we experimented with it is that you can add links...and then the wikipedia police remove them.  This seemed to happen rather inconsistently.
