Dear Alex,

There’s a film called Sunday, made by Paulo Mendel and me, the first audiovisual product of the larger documentary project of transmedia storytelling Stronger Family (http://en.familiastronger.com/).
It’s selected and screened at RAI Film Festival 2019 (https://raifilm.org.uk/films/sunday/) and, as video installation, at 21st Sesc_Videobrasil Biennial of Contemporary Art (http://bienalsescvideobrasil.org.br/artista/paulo-mendel-vitor-grunvald).
It also won Margot Dias and Benjamin Pereira Prize of Ethnographic Film granted by the Portuguese Anthropological Association (APA) - https://www.apantropologia.org/apa/premios-apa/premio-apa-margot-dias-e-benjamim-pereira-antropologia-da-imagem-e-do-som-2019/

If you think it’s a nice pick for the film review session and someone is interested in reviewing it, I can make a link available.
Unfortunately, since it’s still running for festivals, it’s not available widely.

All the best.

Sunday
25 minutes / Colour / 2018 / Brazil
Directed by Paulo Mendel Vitor Grunvald
A colourful and noisy encounter with Família Stronger, a LGBTQIA+ collective in the neighbourhood of Jardim Nazaré, on São Paulo’s periphery. Across a split screen, Sunday portrays a single day in which the collective gather for a lively lunch get-together, then head out into the streets for a protest against the conservative forces behind the 2016 coup d'état. The camera moves freely amongst the boisterous group, capturing spirited banter amongst this alternative queer family (“hey DJ, why the fuck you changed the Spice Girls Song? I’m a fag and I want to party dammit”“), and the force of their political will against a state that seeks to repress their voice.

Dear Alex,
I've got a suggestion for your list, a film with a special social message about how night work will be affected by Brexit and now coronavirus.
Best,
Magda

Nightshift Spitalfields
p: friendsNS2020

Synopsis
A 10-minute documentary, about Ali, a Bulgarian-Turkish porter at the night market, who works six nights a week, often on 15-hour shift, loading and transporting goods. His nightshifts are incredibly demanding, mentally, emotionally and physically. Many workers have families, but it’s almost impossible to have a proper family life when on graveyard shift duty, six nights per week. They can’t take proper part in society, they can’t organise to improve their conditions – they are just exhausted and worn down.

Night workers like Ali are an invisible group of people who keep the city running with their labour. Those of us who sleep at night have no idea that they even exist, but without them, the supermarket shelves would be empty in the morning. Crucially, after the end of the Brexit transition period, these workers won’t be eligible to come here from the EU under freedom of movement. And if the Government introduces the proposed work-based immigration system – requiring workers to either meet a salary threshold of at least £25,600 or a points threshold based on qualifications, English language ability and age, among other things – they won’t be able to come here at all. That’s bad for them and likely even worse for London, which relies heavily on their labour to function as an urban metropolis."
