Hello All,

Historic England archive is closed to the public from last Wednesday and we were all told to work from home from then on.  It's backlog stuff again for us and also personal development time but only so much we can do without the physical items to digitise!

All projects are on hold for us also.

Take care everyone,

Jo

Hi All,

Thank you for setting up this group email chain. Its fascinating to see how other institutions are dealing with this.

The National Museum Wales closed first to the public then to all staff as of yesterday. All projects are on hold and we are working from home the best we can. For the Photography Department means processing our backlog, continuing what image distribution we can and engaging in some online learning/ future planning.

Wishing everyone the best of health,

Ellie

Hello Richard,

I am a freelancer as well as the photo Dept at Birmingham Museums. My freelance work, which is fairly limited (10-15 jobs per year) has either been postponed indefinitely or cancelled.

The situation at Birmingham Museums is different as I usually work on my own in the studio. I’ll be working a combination of edits at home and going into the studio to shoot new works. I’ve also got about two weeks location work to shoot.

I had temporarily worked a solution to access internal BMTs NAS servers via synology quick connect but I had to quickly shut that down, as it breaches our IT depts firewall. Makes working on existing materials or internal systems impossible.

I have been working with collections and going into work as usual until today, keeping my distance from everyone, wearing gloves, with virtually no help or assistance. So no real change there.

Good luck everyone finding new solutions and bridging the gap. If and when things return to normal expect to be extremely busy.

David Rowan.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses, interesting to see how things progress in different institutions.

How are people dealing with transferring files from home to servers?

Cheers

Hope everybody is well.

The National Library of Wales closed to the public earlier in the week, and to staff at 5pm last night. It's still possible to go in to pick things up etc., but we're encouraged to stay away.

I have moved what I can into the cloud, and the rest onto external drives. The focus for us is to make sure online resources stay up, and ensure our social media presence remains current and regular. I'm going to focus on reviewing/developing documentation and creating new video content - mostly by repurposing existing stuff, but perhaps also making new content from digitised resources, creating video guides to online services etc.

The rest of the team will be doing some data processing work and some QA/ image processing tasks. We only a have a few weeks work to start with so, we're going to work slowly on it.

If this goes on for months, I'm hoping to set up more robust remote access so we can process backlogs and continue making new material available online.

It's going to be interesting to see how all of this impacts our strategies going forward. I can see even more focus on providing services online.

Stay safe everybody. It would be good if we could keep in contact and support each other.

Scott

I am also looking at setting up a community-type Linked-In or a Facebook group (closed or semi-closed) as it might be more appropriate and easy to use for sharing images, videos etc. Please comment if you think this is a good idea and which platform you are more likely to use (on mobile/ work laptop/ home computer etc.)

In fact there are engineers working from home while having full access and control over hardware that sits on their office desks. In addition we have various open channels for continuous communication between team members.
