Literary Atlas: Plotting English Language Novels in Wales

Dr Kieron Smith, Swansea University

 

Literary Atlas, an AHRC-funded collaboration between academics at the universities of Cardiff and Swansea, set out to unpack the rich connections between literature and place. The project explored new ways of 'mapping' these links in order to examine and stimulate interest in culture, people, place, and history. Through a range of research activities, including the creation of an online resource (www.literaryatlas.wales), public focus groups, literary field trips, and a touring exhibition of commissioned cartographic artworks, the project asked a range of questions: what role does culture play in the construction of places? What role does place play in the production of culture? How does literary culture impact on the ways individuals and communities inhabit and experience places? What role can digital mapping play in strengthening and enriching community identity and lived experience?

 

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Kieron Smith is an interdisciplinary researcher working in the fields of Welsh culture and politics. He worked as Research Associate on the Literary Atlas project at Cardiff University. His publications include John Ormond's Organic Mosaic: Poetry, Documentary, Nation (UWP, 2019) and New Theoretical Perspectives on Dylan Thomas (UWP, 2020). He is currently an Honorary Research Associate at CREW (Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales), Swansea University.
