Black Saturday


i


While we waited

the earth rumbled

We licked our lips

eyes on the horizon

What would it be first?

Flaming embers, bright orange heat

or the over-amplified sound of crackling branches?

While we slept

it murdered on

in Strathewan, Marysville, St Andrews

When my eyes flicked open myopically

I thought the blowsy box-leaf canopy

was a massive plume of smoke

But it wasn’t. This time
