Hi Paul,

Thank you for sharing those cases in other universities. Here I know about two universities that have "Design" programs, whereas where I work in Colombia, we still have an "Industrial Design" (as most of the universities still do)
I would say that the undergraduate programs could help people to discover their preferences (including theorizing) so that later they can choose a graduate program to deepen in the field. Nevertheless, I do not have stats about how easy it is for a "Designer" to find a job compared to the possibilities for an "Industrial Designer", for example.

We also see in Colombia a decline in many disciplines, and I would agree that this could lead universities to merge existing ones and create other new ones.

Hi Lucas,

I think generic "Design" degrees could be on the rise in the UK already. There are courses in Design at Oxford Brookes University and Lancaster University. It's my understanding that they do a bit of everything - product, furniture, architecture, maybe interior design, but I'm not sure if either teach design theory as a discipline-independent field of study or if they just teach design theory from Product Design literature when doing a product based module and Architecture when doing Architecture, etc. I think there are people from Lancaster University in the group that could give a better idea of this.

There's also a degree in Design at Goldsmiths that seems to be entirely discipline neutral and heavy on a Design theory and philosophy.

I could see some smaller universities merging courses into something more like this due to low student numbers spread across different disciplines in the next couple of years too. Particularly as the number of students studying Design at pre degree level continues to decline (-23% this year over the last).

Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes, I agree with you, your definition is robust and broad enough to be inclusive to the different types of design fields.
I wonder if we as a society will end up having only "Design" programs (as some universities already have begun doing)

Hi Lucas,

1. Yes, artefacts can be anything that can be designed; products, services, systems, processes, communications, buildings, interiors, etc.

2. Yes, any stakeholder is possible as the beneficiary; the buyer, the manufacturer, the directors of the company, the distributor, humanity (e.g. if more environmentally sustainable), a dog if it is a kennel, etc.

I think it is robust to all of the variables possible in both of these.

Regards,
Paul

Dear all,

Thank for sharing this Paul.
Regarding your definition what would you say about:

1. Does "artefacts" include services, processes or systems?
2. Does "stakeholders" include the non-human ones?

Best,

Lucas R. Ivorra Peñafort

Dear all,

I have also spent considerable time trying to define 'Design' in an objective, discipline-neuutral manner and I have come to the following defintion so far;

"Design is the act of consciously and intentionally synthesising information, tacit knowledge and intuition into realisable plans for novel artefacts within externally set constraints that would be fit to purpose and beneficial over existing alternatives for one or more stakeholders upon realisation."

I have no doubt that it is imperfect or not completely robust, as with any definition of Design, but I would be interested to hear any suggestions of how it is an insufficient definition or how the logic of it can be broken.

Regards,
Paul

Dear Stéphane:

I have had a stab at answering that question. Others have too. I wish to avoid a theological debate on "what is design" but consider that the inability of people self-labelled as designers to agree what it is leads to the absurd situation of the world-at-large not knowing what we think we do.
This is purely a personal opinion (so treat it with the appropriate weight) but I consider design as incorporating the non-mechanistic dimension (as per David Pye) and the aesthetic dimension (as per Mads Nygaard Folkmann, 2013). I feel attention paid to these will lead to an ethically sound approach to commercial acceptability. Pursuit of business value directly tends to generate the mediocre designs associated with the worst of Anglo-Saxon corporations. I am thinking of mid-80s GM automobiles as the classic example of this.

Regards,

Richard
