The Open University is recruiting a Professor of Statistics to lead the Statistics Group within the School of Mathematics & Statistics. The post-holder will be expected to play a pivotal role in the strategic long-term development of research and teaching within the group.

The Open University’s mission is to be open to people, places, methods and ideas. We provide high-quality university-level education to all who wish to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential and to promote social justice. Through our unique partnership with the BBC, and through dissemination of teaching and research via our online platforms OpenLearn and FutureLearn, our work routinely reaches tens of millions of learners both within the UK and beyond.

Alongside teaching, research is central to the mission of The Open University. The statistics group has historically played a world-leading role in the development of medical statistics and distribution theory with work including that of Prof. Paddy Farrington (recognised by the award of an RSS Bradford Hill Medal) and of Prof. Chris Jones (who has been listed in ISIHighlyCited.com). Following the recent retirement of a number of senior statisticians, the school is looking to appoint an experienced academic to play a leading role in the strategic long-term development of the group and to act as an ambassador for the group in the wider statistical community.

The School of Mathematics & Statistics is a thriving community of 52 academic staff based at the OU’s attractive campus surrounded by parkland in Milton Keynes. The School teaches mathematics and statistics at a tertiary level on a scale unprecedented in the UK or elsewhere. This year we saw over 4500 students registered on our degrees, accounting for 92% of the UK part-time mathematical sciences market. Additionally we teach many thousands of students registered on other degrees in the University.

Applications are welcomed from academics in any area of statistics, with an established track record of research, to complement or augment our existing research strengths and play a key role in the strategic development of research within the group. The successful candidate will also have a commitment to delivering high quality teaching to students from a wide range of backgrounds and can look forward to influencing and shaping the statistical education of very large numbers of students across the world.
