Dear colleagues,

We are happy to invite contributions to our call for papers for the upcoming 2020 RGS-IBG Conference that will take place in London, 1-4 September 2020.

Please find the details below. Deadline is 10th February 2020.

Title: Understanding Transitions to Sustainable Urban Mobility in Global South Cities
Session organisers: Clemence Cavoli and Daniel Oviedo (UCL)

This session intends to bring together new and emerging interdisciplinary research seeking to identify the conditions under which sustainable and inclusive transport and land use development can be accelerated in growing cities in the Global South. In the context of still-low-but-rising levels of motorization, economic growth and increasing social and spatial inequalities, the formulation and implementation of policies, practices and partnerships that can support an accelerated implementation of sustainable mobility is an urgent concern. Rapidly growing cities in the global south experience new challenges and opportunities to plan, govern and regulate urban transport systems in the face of increasing access to new technologies, and shifts in paradigms of individual and collective mobility. Such challenges represent a new area of research on planning, governance and regulation, requiring new conceptual and methodological developments, as well as yielding new empirical evidence.

We are inviting papers that explore practices and drivers of sustainable and inclusive transport and land use development trajectories, through quantitative and qualitative methods applied in rapidly growing cities of the Global South. This session invites contributions from all disciplines exploring transitions to sustainable urban mobility, in particular related to aspects of governance, regulation, decision-making and planning.
Topics might include but are not limited to:

  * Examples of policies and practices targeted to accelerate and leapfrog urban development processes to avoid unsustainable car-dependent developments
  * Examples of implementation and enforcement of regulation and planning practices targeting transitions to more sustainable mobility and how they operate across urban geographies
  * Analysis of the role accessibility, mobility, land-use and their governance play in developing sustainable mobility
  * Analysis of intended and unintended distributional effects of policies and practices targeting transitions to sustainable urban mobility
  * Examples of co-production of sustainable mobility visions and innovative evidence-based participatory governance
  * Methodological approaches that can be drawn from localized research on sustainable urban mobility and replicated in other cities facing similar challenges and opportunities
We are seeking abstracts for oral presentations. Abstracts should include a title, and the names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors.

Timeline:

  * Deadline for submission of abstracts: 10th February 2020
  * The session convenors will communicate the RGS response as soon as informed by the organisers after the 14th February session proposal deadline
  * Deadline for reduced rate ('early-bird') registrations: 12th June 2020
  *   RGS-IBG International conference: Tuesday 1st- Friday 4th September 2020

All interested in contributing to this session, please e-mail an abstract, not exceeding 250 words to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

With best wishes,

Dr Daniel Oviedo
