January and February at the Cathie Marsh Institute

Introduction to Survival Analysis with Stata (23 January 2020)

If you work with retrospective or longitudinal data and are interested in if and when certain events are taking place, depending on specific circumstances, survival analysis (also known as event history or exposure occurrence analysis) might just be the statistical method for you.

This course aims to introduce participants to the theory and concept of survival analysis and provides strategies to decide for which research questions this method has benefits over alternative approaches. The course will further cover the preparation of datasets, discuss some common pitfalls and train the participants in interpretation of statistical and graphical results. The practical exercises should enable the participants to set up data and conduct analysis on their own. This course is designed for researchers who are already familiar with the Stata software to develop their skills.

Intermediate R (6 February 2020)

Brand new for 2020!  If you have attended one of our introductory courses in R, or are already familiar with R and R-Studio, this course will introduce you to the tidyverse package for data cleaning and data visualization. The course combines lecture content with hands-on practical sessions using real-world data.

Introduction to Cluster Analysis (7 February 2020)

The course covers basic ideas and concepts in cluster analysis including hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering methods and their application. Throughout the day, participants will have guided practicals in R using ecological data from the UK Census of population on how to choose and transform variables for cluster analysis, how to perform cluster analysis using different clustering techniques, and how to examine cluster results and cluster validity.

Plus many more courses coming up in February, including…

And our brand new Social Data Science Week, introducing free and open-source software such as:
