We have just sent out our January 2020 issue of 'Cairt: the newsletter of the Scottish Maps Forum', which is available online as a PDF at: https://www.nls.uk/media/1767407/cairt36.pdf

The main highlights of this issue include:

* Details of our next Scottish Maps Forum Seminar, which will be held in Perth on Friday 15 May 2020. ( View flier and booking form at: https://www.nls.uk/media/1767542/scottish-maps-forum-seminar-2020.pdf  ).

This day seminar brings together a range of talks from those who have been recently working on projects relating to early maps of Scotland. The morning will be particularly devoted to local and community mapping projects that have made maps newly available for research, including rescue and digitisation initiatives. During the lunch break, there will be a tour and display of early maps in Perth and Kinross Archives. The afternoon will showcase a recent map restoration project, as well as several ongoing research activities, including work on the Stevenson civil engineering plans, on Scottish lime kilns, and on the automatic extraction of features from historic maps.

Three brief summaries of recent research:

* Evaluating some sources for Scottish county map history, by Diana Webster. Re-assessing the work of George Paton, Richard Gough and John Thomson as sources for Scottish county map history.

* Newly discovered plans by Stephen McDougall, by John Moore. Recent discoveries of work by a mid-18th century Glasgow land-surveyor.

* When to trust the Roy Military Survey, by Christopher Dingwall. Highlighting some significant differences between the Roy 'original protraction' and 'fair copy' for selected sites.

* Recent NLS map website additions - several of our recent digitisation projects focus on medium scale mapping of Great Britain at 1:20,000-1:25,000 from the 20th century:
