This MA + PhD studentship, funded by the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership, is a collaboration with the Map Collections and Digital Scholarship Service at the National Library of Scotland (NLS). The research will create new understandings of environmental pasts and presents in Southern India using methods drawn from the digital humanities.

Applicants with an interest in environmental history from several disciplines are invited to apply, including History, Geography, Sociology, Digital Humanities and South Asian Studies.

The studentship is offered on a 1+3 basis allowing the student to undertake the MA in Digital Humanities at Lancaster University before progressing to a PhD in the water histories of Southern India. The student will be based in the Department of History at Lancaster University and will receive co-supervision and training from Dr Jonathan Huck, Department of Geography, Manchester University, and Chris Fleet, Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland.

This is a CASE award whose ESRC funding will cover full fees and a tax-free stipend, c (full-time: £15,009, part-time: £7,504.50 for 2018/19). Further funding for research expenses is available via the Research Training Support Grant. Part-time applications are welcome.
