The ESRC-funded Consumer Data Research Centre at the University of Leeds is currently offering the following courses in Spring 2020:

 

Introduction to QGIS with raster data

24th Jan 2020 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, University of Leeds 

Course Tutor: Steve Carver

This one-day course introduces Quantum Geographical Information Systems (QGIS) and builds on basic knowledge of data manipulation, mapping and analysis. The emphasis of this course is working with raster data in the context of a variety of environmental applications by exploring surface geo-processing tools within QGIS. The course will mix teaching with demonstrations and hands-on exercises.

Who is this course suitable for?

This course assumes that you have basic IT skills.  Although it is not a requirement for participants to have prior knowledge or experience of using QGIS, attendance on the ‘vector’ QGIS course is recommended as it will provide a greater understanding of the tools and functionality of the software. Participants should be familiar with the Microsoft Windows environment.

Spatial Analysis for Public Health Researchers – still places left

Course Tutor: Michelle Morris

This one-day course offers an introduction to spatial analytics in a public health context. As spatial data sets get larger, more sophisticated software needs to be harnessed for their analysis. R is now a widely used open source software platform for statistical analysis and is increasingly popular for those working with spatial data thanks to its powerful analysis and visualisation packages. This course introduces the basics of how R can be used for spatial data. The course will begin with an overview of different spatial units and how they fit together. Public health examples will be used to illustrate the relevance of using each of these units. You will work through examples of how spatial units can be added into existing data sets. In the afternoon you will generate your first map using public health data.

 

Who is this course suitable for? This course is for researchers who want to start looking at spatial or social variations in their data and generating maps to present results. The course will assume that your knowledge of spatial scales and generation of maps is zero. Examples will all be from a public health context.

Tableau Workshop – bookings now open

2nd March 2020 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Course Tutor: Roy Ruddle

This one-day interactive course, in association with The Alan Turing Institute, provides a practical introduction to data visualization with Tableau Desktop, an industry-leading visualization tool. You will learn how to create effective visualizations that range from bar and line charts to heat maps and geographic maps using Tableau, as well as how to avoid common pitfalls. You’ll then have the opportunity to apply your knowledge by tackling a series of data analysis ‘challenges’. This is a workshop and thus will involve hands-on practical exercises.

 

Who is this course suitable for?

The workshop is open to academic staff and students only due to licensing restrictions, irrespective of their level of knowledge on Tableau. No prior knowledge is assumed for this course other than having basic IT skills. However, you will get the most out of the course if you complete in advance the Get Started tutorial.

Beginner’s Python for Data Analysis – bookings now open

26th-27th March 2020 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, University of Leeds 

Course Tutor: Francesca Pontin

This two-day course will introduce you to some basic data analytics skills in Python, and is aimed at novices, with day 1 introducing the basics of Python programming including data types, packages, data cleaning, data exploration and visualisation, as well as some basic data manipulation and statistics. At the end of day 1 we will also help you get started with using Python on your own machine, so it is preferable that you bring your own laptop with you. Day 2 will build on the skills learnt in day 1 and introduce spatial data analytics including visualisation, spatial manipulations and some basic spatial analysis. The afternoon of day 2 gives you the opportunity to put your newfound python data analytic skills into practice in a supported environment. Using either your own data or an example dataset from the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC). We also aim to help you get started with GitHub in order to effectively save and manage versions of your code. We take a practical approach to getting you started with coding early, with short explanations followed by practical exercises to work through.

Who is this course suitable for? This course is for researchers who want to start looking at data analysis in Python. Day 1 of the course will assume that your knowledge of Python is zero, whereas day 2 will develop on knowledge gained in day 1 and apply this to spatial data visualisation and analysis. Please bring your own laptop with you.

Cost:
