The deal is the transitional period. After the transitional period ends,
there is either a permanent trade deal or it’s back to no deal. The EU GDPR
applies until the end of 2020, then the UK GDPR kicks in.

I think it’s a mistake to assume we will get an adequacy decision, or that
little will change after the end of 2020 for anyone with data transfers
back and forth from the EU. The transitional deal buys us time, but nobody
knows whether the government will use that time constructively or
successfully.

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but most of the guidance about Brexit on
the ICO website is about what happens if the UK leaves the EU with no deal.

Am I right in thinking that we do have a deal, and that is why there is a
transition period to the end of this year?

In which case, will GDPR itself (not the 'UK GDPR' that results from the Data
Protection, Privacy and Electronic Communications (Amendments etc) (EU
Exit) Regulations 2019
<http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2019/419/contents/made>) continue to
apply until the end of the transition period? And then what? Does 'UK
GDPR' take over, and we wait for an adequacy decision from the EU, or is it
likely that there will be a different arrangement negotiated?

I know that in either case very little will change on the ground, but I do
like to know for sure.
Best wishes,

Paul
