National Conservation Service - 10 year Anniversary 2010 to 2020

NCS launched its Conservation Grants scheme in 2018/19, with donations from our Business members and a start-up grant from the Dyson Trust. Grants are available for a range of purposes, as set out on our website http://ncs.org.uk/ncsgrantfund.php

Four grants were awarded in 2019. News about the grants and their recipients can be seen here: http://ncs.org.uk/blog.php The grants applied for and awarded to date have all been under the Projects and Research strand 1. We are delighted that these have contributed towards helping institutions attract further funding from other trusts such as the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust and the Welsh Federation of Museums. Two of the NCS Grants alone, together totalling £981.20, have helped raise £12,644.00 in project funding.

To celebrate ten years of working with archives, libraries and museums across the UK, NCS has ring-fenced a sum in the Fund to encourage suitable applicants to seek support under strand 4. Membership. This will be in addition to grants for the other strands which continue to be available. Archivists, librarians and other custodians who believe that their institutions would benefit from having an Accredited Conservator working alongside them on site to support them in planning and projects, but who fear that their institutions' poor income may make it a struggle to justify allocating scant resources for membership, can apply for year-one Full Membership supported by the Grant Fund. The aim must be that from year two, at least 50% of their membership subscription will be paid for by the institution (with Grant support for the other 50%) and from year three ongoing membership at Full level will be fully resourced by them. Applicant organisations must be non-profits or Trusts and make their collections accessible in some form, including volunteer-run organisations.

If you would like to apply for a Membership grant, please write with an expression of interest, to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> Ideally you will have either identified a local Accredited Conservator (freelance) who is willing to support you under the NCS 'umbrella', or have an idea of what type of conservation-related expertise you need so that we can allocate an Associate accordingly.

Our Business Members and Partners that currently contribute to the NCS Conservation Grant Fund are: Arcade-UK Ltd, Jamie Briggs Removals Ltd and from January 2020, Bruynzeel Storage Systems Ltd (about whom a further announcement will be made soon.) If you are interested in your company becoming a Business Member or even a Partner, please contact us at the above email.
