At the Brotherton Library (University of Leeds) we will be embarking on an exciting project to extend and reconfigure our research centre space to make it welcoming and fit for the 21st century. This will provide larger and improved facilities for group work, dedicated teaching/ events space and quiet space for individual researchers. Our intention is for researchers to be able to use all types of cultural and heritage collections in the space - archives, rare books, maps, art, textiles, objects and born digital collections.

I would be really interested to hear from anyone with experience of similar capital works (big or small) - what worked really well - but also, what would you not repeat? Some things on my mind are reception/document production facilities, lighting, furniture, display areas, soundproofing, digital capabilities....

I am happy to collate any information shared with me directly for the benefit of the list.
