Hi Alex, There's a nice chapter in The New Idea of A University by Duke Maskell (2002) where he gives an account of his own experience of academia over the decades. I like it for its nuance (it recognises that performativity and measurement isn't completely evil). Also, you're probably familiar with it but Bruce Macfarlane's Teaching With Integrity contains a wealth of fictional but very 'real' accounts of life in the modern academy. I use them a lot with our PgCert participants.
