Hi all,

Thanks Sebastian for mentioning UKDS. We have indeed been approached to recommend the standard, but are in the process of trying out various software conversions to see what it means in practice, and how it might work as an archival format.

Once we have finished our testing and are happy, we would add to our list of recommended formats: https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/manage-data/format/recommended-formats

We use a very similar QuDEx XML standard in our Qualibank interface for data content publishing (https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/media/428412/qualibankguide.pdf). We are looking at cross walk between REFI and this.

Happy to share our experiences with others.

Best,

Louise

I’m afraid yes, we have to charge for deposits given the nature of research & research infrastructure funding in the US, but we can currently (due to ongoing grants) afford to be quite generous with waivers, especially where data are of particular interest to us and/or the research community (as is the case for QDA data).

Happy to talk more, though probably better to take that off the list so as to not crowd everyone’s mailbox.

Best,

Sebastian

Thanks Sebastian!  Am I right to think that QDR deposit is now charged for?

https://qdr.syr.edu/deposit#deposit-fees

(although I note fees are waived for graduate students).

Good to know that interoperability is a live issue.  I’ll update my enquirer (a QDA teacher and advocate) and let him know about the potential opportunities for collaboration on guidance material.

Sincere regards,

Kirstyn

Hi Kristyn and everyone,

And greetings from the Qualitative Data Repository.

I should start by clarifying that REFI-QDA does not actually recommend us (as far as I know) but lists us as one of three repositories that have officially adopted the format as a recommendation. The other two, DANS and DataverseNO, are both European and the list is open to any other data repository adopting the standard.

The REFI-QDA format is quite new – the launch was early this year and most vendors didn’t fully incorporate the format until this summer, so it’s not surprising that few repositories have taken this up, but from our perspective the fact that the biggest players -- atlas.ti, NVivo, MaxQDA -- are all on board together with several smaller tools and that this is based on an open (XML) standard is very exciting and a huge step forward. People who know this space well may know that UKDS is actually a pioneer on this, and Louise Corti spearheaded an earlier effort to establish a similar standard (QDEx), but wasn’t able to get vendor buy-in.

Louise was also part of several meetings about the REFI-QDA standard and my understanding is that UKDS are likely to adopt the format as a recommendation – I think she and several colleagues are also on this listserv, so can correct or update this.

I’ve also CCd Christina Silver who is both at the CAQDAS Network in Surrey and the designated contact for REFI-QDA (and was heavily involved in its creation) and may be able to speak to efforts to document interoperability. At QDR we haven’t had the chance to test the actual software outputs from various tools as much as we’d like to and we’d be very happy to collaborate with others on this if there’s interest. I’m also hoping to set up a page with export instruction from all tools that support the format – ideally I think that should be on qdasoftware.org, but I’m also happy to create this as independent documentation. Feel free to contact me off list if you’re interested in a conversation.

All the best,

Sebastian

Subject: data repositories and QDA formats

Hello

A local QDA enthusiast has asked me to investigate which repositories are best placed to manage files originating from NVivo, Atlas TI and other qualitative data analysis software,  and what position they take on the REFI interoperability standards.

https://www.qdasoftware.org/

There seems to be very little support for QDA outputs in the repositories I’m familiar with:  the UKDS categorises NVivo and Atlas TI formats as “acceptable”  (although not “recommended”),  and Figshare and Zenodo don’t appear to have any QDA-specific advice.

I’ve discovered the CAQDAS project at Surrey,  which I can see is still being updated – can anyone tell me whether they have the capacity to develop any new training material on interoperability?

https://www.surrey.ac.uk/computer-assisted-qualitative-data-analysis

The REFI project website itself recommends the Qualitative Data Repository based at Syracuse.  Does anyone know of a European equivalent which is well supported?

https://qdr.syr.edu/

Thanks and best wishes,

Kirstyn
