Pop Science Writing - Dr Peter Etchells
What are the advantages and disadvantages of writing about science in the public sphere? Is it worth starting a science blog any more? What is the best way to go about writing popular science books as a career route? In this talk, Pete
will draw on his experience of co-ordinating the Guardian's science blog network for four years, and outline what the personal and public benefits are that blogging about research can bring. He'll also provide some insights into the book publishing industry,
as well as the writing process itself.
Dr Peter Etchells is Reader in Psychology and Science Communication at Bath Spa University. His current research interests lie in understanding the short- and long-term behavioural effects of playing video games. He is also interested in
the interaction between scientists and the media, and particularly how scientific research (for example, about video games) gets picked up in the mainstream news. For four years he coordinated the science blogs network for the Guardian, where he also wrote
the psychology blog Head Quarters. He is currently a blogger for the Cosmic Shambles Network.
