medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
P.S. A more recent English translation (with notes, foreword, and commentary) is found in The Monastic Rules (New City Press, 2004).

Dear Meg,

Good morning! On the MSS tradition of the Regula Sancti Augustini, see L. Verheijen, La Règle de saint Augustin (1967, 2 vols, including critical edition of the Latin) and his follow-up, Nouvelle approche de la Règle de saint Augustin (1980). There's a Latin text with facing English translation in G. Lawless, Augustine of Hippo and his Monastic Rule (Oxford, 1987), which also includes a lengthy discussion of the text, its date, its origin, etc. For a more recent review of the scholarship (written by Lawless), see the entry on "Regula (the Rule)" in Augustine through the Ages (Eerdmans, 1999), pp. 707ff.

Hi Tom,
What is the history of the text in the link? Date? Manuscripts?
My inventories list only titles, no actual mss. have survived to my knowledge (though who knows what may be hidden by inaccurate entries in mss. catalogues!)

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
The inventory of an Augustinian house from c. 1461 records that it owned 'Constitutiones Canonicorum regularium in three books.' I quick google search reveals, unsurprisingly, that published 'constitutiones' usually include the name of the specific house (in this case Möðruvellir in Northern Iceland, though obviously they would not have thought necessary to state this in the inventory.) I´m wondering if there is, in fact, a 'generic' rule for Augustinian canons? My recollection is that this is not the case -  the rules in fact varied by house - but I may be out of date or something may have been published that I´ve missed. Any advice will be much appreciated!
Meg
