Dear list members I’m pleased to announce on behalf of the Chinese Film Forum UK, our conference on Women in East Asian Cinema, to be held at HOME, Manchester 4th to 6th December 2019. In this three-day conference, practitioners and researchers will be brought together through a mix of paper presentations, panel discussions, and events with industry guests, to highlight the increasing English-language research of women in East Asian cinema and to interrogate questions of labour, representation, and production contexts. The event is hosted as a collaboration between the Chinese Film Forum UK (CFFUK), a Manchester-based collective, and HOME. 2019 marks ten years since “Visible Secrets: Hong Kong’s Women Filmmakers”: a film season that was organised by a nascent CFFUK at HOME’s old Cornerhouse venue. This year also marks HOME’s year-long programming initiative “Celebrating Women in Global Cinema” which continues the celebratory, research-led and consciousness raising ethos of the Visible Secrets project. We are delighted to welcome Dr Jinhee Choi, Kings College London, as keynote speaker and Hong Kong director Jessey Tsang Tsui-Shan, who will present and discuss the UK Premiere of her latest film The Lady Improper (2019). Registration for our conference is now open via the HOME box office online. There is an early bird deadline for Wednesday 27th November. Early bird tickets are £25 (£20 student and other concessions) — this ticket covers all three days of the conference even though the link on the website only indicate the first Wednesday. After the early bird deadline, tickets will be charged at £35/£30 conc. The conference fee has been kept at a low rate to cover basic venue costs only. Please note that no lunch or refreshments will be provided. However, we will be in a venue with three bars, a restaurant and a cafe, and there are various places to eat and drink nearby, including two supermarkets. It is a relaxed and relaxing environment, so hopefully you will find that these minimal arrangements work better than regular UK university fare.
