The history and future of art classification: an ARLIS 50th anniversary event

Thursday 28th November, 18:00-20:00

Royal Society of Sculptors, South Kensington (Dora House, 108 Old Brompton Rd, London SW7 3RA)

This event is free to attend. However, pre-booking is required through https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-history-and-future-of-art-classification-an-arlis-50th-anniversary-event-tickets-79701560513

Are you interested in classification? Do you wonder how we got to our current, clunky and often unethical systems? Do you wonder what art or any classification will look like in the next 5 years, 10 years or 50 years? ARLIS cataloguing and classification committee are holding a free evening event about art classification and classification more generally. This informal event includes a short lecture by Prof. Vanda Broughton, an opportunity for discussion, and a chance to meet others over wine, soft drinks, and light refreshements.

The event is free; booking essential.

Description:

This evening event will celebrate ARLIS’s 50th anniversary by contemplating one of the key tenets of art libraries: the classification of art libraries and art resources. This informal event will look at general developments in classification over the last 50 years, and will contemplate the future of art classification. At the centre of the event is a lecture by distinguished classification scholar and editor of classification schemes, Professor Vanda Broughton, Emeritus Professor at UCL. This will be followed by a discussion session about the future of art classification, including audience questions, which we hope will generate some lively discussion. The final part of the event offers a networking opportunity, offering an informal and friendly environment for those interested in classification and/or art libraries to share experiences, expand their professional network, and talk over a soft drink or glass of wine and some light refreshments.

This event has been kindly supported by ARLIS and is therefore free to attend. However, pre-booking your place is essential: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-history-and-future-of-art-classification-an-arlis-50th-anniversary-event-tickets-79701560513
