italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies Dear colleagues, Please consider submitting an abstract for the following panel to be proposed at SHARP2020, Amsterdam, 15 to 19 June 2020. Between authors and their publishers: for a history of publishing mediators SHARP2020, to be held in Amsterdam from 15 to 19 June 2020, proposes to consider the multifaceted relations between written texts and power. Within this framework, this panel will explore the role of publishing mediators in modern book history (ca 1830 onward) to consider how their intervention altered and reshaped power dynamics between the authors and their publishers. Working between formality and informality, over the last two centuries a wide range of intellectual and professional figures have performed a networking function between writers and emerging cultural industries. While such work has frequently been overlooked by historiography on publishing and book markets, publishing houses’ and personal archives have recently started to shed light on the efforts to bridge the gap between producers and distributors of cultural materials. Paper proposals might consider, but not be limited to, the following themes: * Intellectuals and literary critics as gatekeepers to publishing houses and literary journals * The rise of literary agents and the power shift in copyright negotiations * Professionals within publishing houses: directors and editors * The mediating function of translators * The historical figure of ‘exceptional’ and ‘common readers’ * Publishing roles as a starting point for literary careers Abstracts up to 250 words should be submitted to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] by 15 December 2019, accompanied by a short bio of approx. 100 words.
