York St John University is seeking to appoint an External Examiner for our Data Science Degree Apprenticeship programme.  The post will commence as soon as possible and will be for four years. 

 

This is a new programme, so the external examiner will be required to oversee level 4 of the programme in this first year of operation.

 

As this is a degree apprenticeship programme, it works in the following way:

 

Student apprentices work in a company/government agency etc but are released for independent study (~1 day a week) as well as for 4 block teaching weeks per year, and the assessments. They do five 20 credit modules per year, having gained 300 credits by the end of the 3rd year, followed by a 6 month window where they do an end-point assessment (EPA), which also bears 60 credits and completes the 360 credit BSc (as well as the apprenticeship). As such, it is integrating rigorous academic study with work-based learning.

 

The programme consists modules in the following areas:

 

• 1st year: Programming, Linear Algebra, Analysis & Optimisation, Practice in Interdisciplinary Problem Solving, Probability, Statistics & Data Analysis
• 2nd year: Object oriented programming, Databases, Geometry & Groups, Communication, Modelling & Numerical Analysis
• 3rd year: Graphs, Networks & Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Data Applications, Data Visualisation, Work-based Project

 

The EPA consists of a knowledge test, a report based on the work-based project and a professional discussion based on a work portfolio.

 

Appointees are responsible for overseeing the modules associated with the programme, and are required to moderate a sample of scripts relating to each module and report on these to the module leader. Regular attendance at Assessment Boards and the provision of an annual report to the University would also be expected.
