Hi Wendy

This looks like an oil box for some sort of machine, possibly a ship’s engine but just as likely to be something on land like a railway engine. The two holes are where worsted wicks would be placed to siphon the oil from the reservoir though the holes to the part that needed lubrication. Taking the wicks out when the machine had finished work stopped the oil from continuing to flow. I’ve attached a drawing of something similar.

Hello,

I have been sent these photographs of a brass box for identification. The box is approx. 3in x 6in x 3 inch, is roughly made and weighs around 1 kilogram. The owners bought it in Weymouth and think it may have a maritime connection. Any thoughts on what it might be please?

Thank you
