The position of Postdoctoral Fellow in Laser Spectroscopy is available in the Molecular Photonics group, in the School of Chemistry. The Postdoctoral Fellow will perform experiments pursuant to the goals of a Discovery Project funded by the Australian Research Council to identify and account for interstellar carbon and identify carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands, including the 217nm hump.

About the role

• $76K - $102K plus 9.5% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term – 12 months
• Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow reports to Professor Timothy Schmidt and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

• Perform laser spectroscopy experiments on radicals and ions in jet-cooled molecular beams using resonant-ionization mass spectrometry and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy.
• Design and perform experiments using broadband UV sources to reproduce the 217nm interstellar absorption feature and understand its origins.
• Analyse laboratory spectra and interpret experimental data.
• Present experimental results at regular group meetings.
• Write scientific communications intended for publication in refereed journals.
• Supervise graduate and undergraduate research students.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

• A PhD in chemical spectroscopy or laboratory astrophysics.
• Demonstrated experience in laser spectroscopy of molecular beams, preferentially of radicals and ions of astrophysical relevance.
• Demonstrated experience in the application of quantum chemical packages to spectroscopic problems.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in a research environment with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Demonstrated experience in supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students.
• Demonstrated experience in presenting research outcomes to audiences such as at seminars and international conferences.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
