I agree with regards to the concession model, but (unless I’ve misunderstood how this usually works for museums) that means that they pay to be there, not freeload.

Which is exactly the same problem we have with digital collections. Gotta have that non-commercial licence because we could be making money off these images. Even if we’re not, we can’t run the risk of someone coming up with something we’ll be kicking ourselves over for not doing first.

And to answer Nick’s comment about how these sorts of businesses should be treated, how about the same way you treat the franchise that’s running your café? It’s an external business who can help increase the dwell time in your museum. If there’s a hole in your programming so big it can sustain a start up business, why not work with them?

Fwiw MuseumHack isn’t simply about tours. They do a lot of work with museums all over the world to help them improve their own programming and tours. I met Nick at MuseumNext a few years ago. He’s a nice guy who genuinely loves museums.

I think you hit the nail on the head - it’s a wake up call that there is a market for highly engaging museum tours and to consider how current internal offerings fall short.

There’s an interesting side question though on how this “over the top” offering - which effectively allows an external provider to leverage “your” infrastructure and conservation work to build their business - should be treated.

The obvious answer to that question is that we as a sector are not doing something right or in a relatable, accessible way if a company like that based in one big city can run their own tours and get that much money in revenue.

Obviously so many people in public programming are making vast strides to be appealing, young, accessible, and non-dusty, but there is still so far to go.

Oh granted, sounds like a total dudebro - but putting to one side the irritating “always be closing” style - why is him boasting of building a company offering independent museum tours a problem?

We could start with the unbelievably smug and nauseating tone of the article itself?
