LSE Library have organised a series of talks on the issues faced and facing academic refugees with University of East London Archives, LSE Ideas, LSE Human Rights and the LSE Centre for Contemporary Turkish Studies in the last week of November. The week begins with a consideration of William Beveridge’s role in organising the Academic Assistance Council for people fleeing persecution in Nazi Germany in 1933 and finishes with observations from academics on the issues facing academics in many areas (including the UK!) of the world today:

 

·         Tuesday 26 November 6:30 to 8:00pm "The Kindness of Strangers": Hitler, Beveridge and the origins of the Academic Assistance Council, lecture by Professor Michael Cox (LSE Ideas), CLM 4.06 in Clement House on the Aldwych.

·         Thursday 28 November 1:30 to 1:45pm, Education Without Borders: refugee rights in higher education, Lightning talk by Paul Dudman (UEL), Gallery in LSE Library on Portugal Street

·         Friday 29 November 6.30 to 8.30pm, Global Attack on Academia: examples from Turkey, Egypt, China/Asia, India, and the UK, 15 minute observations by Dr Lori Allen (SOAS), Ahmed Ezzat (Cambridge), Professor Esra Özyürek (LSE) and Dr Seçkin Sertdemir Özdemir (LSE), Professor Hyun Bang Shin (LSE) Dr Subir Sinha (SOAS), Chair Dr Monika Krause (LSE), Auditorium in Centre Building on Portugal Street.
