Dear friend, We are delighted to invite you to 'Telling Our Own Stories: People Of Colour In Scotland's Media' on September 27th, at the Kinning Park Complex, Glasgow. This event is a space for people of colour who work in, or have an interest in, the
media to come together, learn, share and build networks. It’s the beginning of a conversation about the lack of representation in Scotland’s media and what we can do about it together. We have an incredible line up of participants so far, including: * Arusa
Qureshi: Arusa is the Editor of The List. * Chris Manson: Chris is a writer and illustrator based in Glasgow. * Nico Ndlovu: Nico is stand up comedian and community journalist living in Glasgow. * Shola da Rocha-Afodu: Shola is a content creator for BBC The
Social. * layla-roxanne hill: layla-roxanne is a writer/curator-artist/activist-organiser. She writes for Bella Caledonia, is curator for Enough! and a Director at Scotland's investigative journalism co-operative, The Ferret * Dr Francesca Sobande: Dr Sobande
is a lecturer in digital media studies at Cardiff University We are also glad to be joined by Guardian columnist Gary Younge. Gary is an award-winning author and broadcaster, based in London. He also writes a monthly column, Beneath the Radar, for the Nation
magazine and is the Alfred Knobler Fellow for The Nation Institute. He has written five books and made several radio and television documentaries on subjects ranging from gay marriage to Brexit. Telling Our Own Stories will be documented and photographed by
Najma Abukar. When the media fails to properly reflect society, it distorts which stories are told, how they are told, who gets to tell them. There are too many stories misreported or ignored. People of colour are massively unrepresented among Scotland’s professional
journalists. Across the UK, those producing our media are 94% white, compared to just 87% of the wider population. It’s time for change; we need to tell our own stories. Book your free ticket(s) here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/telling-our-own-stories-people-of-colour-in-scotlands-media-tickets-71064444667
Telling Our Own Stories is open to people of colour and we welcome people of colour of all genders and intersecting identities. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Lunch will be provided by Kuche. --------------------------------------------------------
