We worked with Kadec http://www.kadec.co.uk/museums.htm to review asbestos in our collection and make safe. They identified one object which was dangerous and they disposed of (with a sealed tent and white boilersuits) and cleaned/sealed/warned us about any other risks/potential risks. When it came to our gas masks they sealed with a clear silicon.  However, as per Nick’s comments, my understanding is that was to make them safe for storage/our limited handling, not for them to be available to the public to try on. You can pay for the asbestos parts to be wholly removed but that costs a lot more.

Kadec were not cheap but I managed to persuade our Housing department to use their end of year asbestos budget to cover it!

They were reasonably good in terms of working with our collections –but it was tricky as I wasn’t allowed close to it.

With best wishes,
Roz

I don't think it's as simple as that.

Asbestos is lethal and the regulations associated with it are appropriate for the dangers. There should be a register of asbestos in your collection in order to know where the risks are (brakes on old vehicles are often asbestos). Removal of it is not cheap and involves men in spacesuit and ventilated tents. The type used in gas masks I believe is also blue asbeatos, which is more lethal than the more standard white.

Sealing them thus is probably the wrong approach if they are to be used in any form - but would be fine for display if no one it putting one on.

You can buy replicas which have never had asbestos in for this purpose as we used them at Cosford.

Good morning everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or recommendations around sealing/making safe WWII gas masks with suspected asbestos? Any good contacts I should look up? We have a number in the collection that are currently in sealed bags and boxes but we’d love to do more with them as our current Spitfire project will give us a new focus on this era.

Many thanks,

Joe
