THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

Post-doctoral Fellow in Experimental Ultrafast Science

in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 498502)

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in Experimental Ultrafast Science in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 498502), to commence as soon as possible for two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field, with an excellent C.V., publication and research record.  They should have experience in experimental ultrafast science including, but not limited to, ultrashort, high power laser pulses, optical spectroscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy; and experience in programming and/or device interfacing.  They should also have strong motivation to work in a competitive and challenging environment and be eager to learn.

The appointee will conduct research in the area of high-order harmonic generation from condensed matters in the newly established group led by Dr. Tran Trung Luu.  The group aims to: (i) push forward the state-of-the-art research in light-solid interaction by combining high-fidelity control of input light fields and precise characterization of radiated light; investigate electronic structure and electronic dynamics in solids using Attosecond Optical Spectroscopy; and (ii) explore possible means to develop light-solid interaction into a versatile source to facilitate ultrafast science.  Enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr. Luu at [log in to unmask].  Information about the group is available at (https://www.physics.hku.hk/~ttluu/). Excellent applicants may be nominated for the Presidential Post-doctoral Fellowship (https://jobs.hku.hk/en/job/495621/presidential-postdoctoral-fellows).

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V. (including publication list, preferably describing contributions to any non-lead-author publications), a cover letter (including direct responses to the selection criteria) not exceeding two pages and a research statement (describing prior research achievements, and future research) not exceeding two pages.  Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for letters of recommendations from at least three referees.

The opening will remain open until filled, although applications received before Dec. 1st 2019 will be given priority.

Experimental PhD position in ultrafast science in The University of Hong Kong

Applications are invited for appointment as PhD candidate in the Department of Physics, to commence as soon as possible.

Background and motivation:

Light-matter interaction in the strong field regime has led to generation of high-order harmonics and thereby facilitated the creation of attosecond (1 as = 10-18 seconds) science. Recently, high-order harmonic generation from condensed matters has been demonstrated and become an active research field. In our newly established group in The University of Hong Kong, we aim to:

(i)             Push forward the state-of-the-art research in light-solid interaction by combining high-fidelity control of input light fields and precise characterization of radiated light. Attosecond Optical Spectroscopy will hopefully be a powerful tool in investigate electronic structure and electronic dynamics in solids.

(ii)            Explore possible means to develop light-solid interaction into a versatile source to facilitate ultrafast science.

Hong Kong is a vibrant city, offering amazing modern life and it is certainly one of the most exciting cities to live in. The University of Hong Kong is not only the oldest but also a global-leading university in Hong Kong, offering a wide range of facilities and a diverse working environment.

Criteria:

- Strong motivation to work in a competitive and challenging environment.

- Eager to learn.

- A Master’s degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field. For candidate who has a Bachelor’s degree only, he/she would need to apply for a 4-year-PhD program.

- Experience in experimental ultrafast science and/or programming is a plus.

- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Scholarship/Fellowship:

(https://www.gradsch.hku.hk/gradsch/prospective-students/scholarship-funding-and-fees). All entitled full-time PhD students are offered fellowships, namely Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS). Excellent students can apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowships (https://www.gradsch.hku.hk/gradsch/prospective-students/scholarship-funding-and-fees#1).

Duration:

Depending on the applicant’s existing degree (MPhil, taught Master or Bachelor), it will be either 3 (MPhil) or 4 (taught Master and/or Bachelor) year PhD program.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to direct any possible questions regarding the post to Dr. Luu at [log in to unmask]. Details of the group can be found in: https://www.physics.hku.hk/~ttluu/.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online via https://www.gradsch.hku.hk/gradsch/prospective-students/how-to-apply. Please send an email with application number to Dr. Luu after submission of application for follow-up action.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for letters of recommendation from at least 2 referees.

The opening will remain open until filled, although applications received before Dec. 1st 2019 will be given priority.
