CCP4 is a large project with the aim of developing and maintaining state of the art analysis software for macromolecular crystallography (MX). We are seeking a new Computational Scientist who is enthusiastic to work in the core CCP4 team at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. 
 
About the role
You will conduct a computer study of multiple scattering effects in Electron Diffraction (ED) by performing large-scale simulations in various crystal systems, comparative analysis of the results with available experimental data and preparation of the theoretical and methodological background for efficient processing of ED data with a substantial contribution from multiple scattering.

 

You will be able to perform the following tasks:

 

·      Produce highly optimised code for ED simulations

·      Identify suitable crystal systems for representative ED simulations

·      Conduct large-scale ED simulations and analyse results

·      Based on ED simulation results, formulate and implement numerical models for multiple scattering effects in ED, which would be useful for effective reduction to kinematic (single-scattering) approximation 

·      Write scientific reports and publications, and present results at scientific meetings and conferences.

About you
It is essential that you are educated to degree level in a numerate science subject or computer science and fluent in C, C++ or Fortran programming languages. You will also have the ability to identify, analyse and solve problems as well as the ability to build key relationships both internally and externally. 

 

It is not essential, but experience of large-scale computer simulations and knowledge of crystallography would be beneficial.
