Dear Colleagues,

thanks,

Microsoft has joined law suits against Climate Change (liability) issues.

Microsoft has also efforts in Github (via R) and specifically now with open source QGIS via the U.S.
that create major problems on the notion of open access and open source code for the world, e.g. Jemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran etc.
Who knows what comes next there ?

The generic mindset of Microsoft is hard-core capitalistic and neoliberal, and always has been.
This has been pointed out in several reviews of their foundation foundation:

https://frederickkaufman.typepad.com/harpersmag/Let%20Them%20Eat%20Cash%21.pdf

See more here with GNU project etc
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software_movement

So I suggest such data sharing policies outlined below get attention accordingly.
It just cannot be done any other; impossible, whatever PR messages we hear!

I may point out here that in my own opinion and experience the discipline of micro-biology, such journals and editors, can be pretty brutal when it comes to
ruthless privatization and lack of data sharing, or in addressing relevant ethical aspects of open access and gains for the wider public good.
The impact factors of such journals, business models and ownership structures speak to that clearly. I ask to change that for betterment.

Thanks; very best

Hi All,

Microsoft has launched a set of data use agreements for data sharing and is inviting comments on them now.

They’re more focussed towards data sharing for AI and machine learning, but they might be of interest to the group.
