Thanks for the article, and I can understand where they’re coming from. However, I’m also reminded that Neil Gaiman (I think), when asked how he felt about people accessing his content without paying full price for it, said that he didn’t mind – the important thing was people reading (or watching) his work.

 

Like any creative industry, there are a few at the top making a fortune (and Gaiman is one of them), and plenty more not doing so. PLR keeps a lot of authors and content creators going. Bottom line is that a free loan might lead to a full price sale, but without that option, many authors would not get any exposure at all.

I don't know of any UK examples of standalone calculators for library savings but the ones I've seen have been quite general (using an average cost per item - like the one linked to from the ALA Library Value Calculator). This can be relatively straightforward to implement depending on your website/blog setup. Let me know if you'd like more info about this. 

 

I also like the way many libraries are implementing this via their LMS using the price of the item. For example, here's a guide ByWater Solutions wrote for how you can include the savings amount on the printed receipt using the Koha LMS.
