Hi Robin

Just having a quick look at what was chapter 6 in Version 5 and now chapter 4 in version 6 of the handbook – the section on searching, and I can’t help but think that there have been some quite substantial changes to the text. Have I missed something when looking at version 6?

Many thanks, Robin.
Can you tell us when the technical supplement for the searching chapter will be available? I think the supplement will have most of the technical content I am interested in.
Best wishes,
Kate

Hi Mina and Kate,

Just to clarify that anyone can sign up for a Cochrane account and view available chapters from version 6 of the handbook (access is not restricted to only Cochrane contributors).

Select the link to the PDF chapters on this page: https://training.cochrane.org/handbook
And then select the option to “Log in with Cochrane account”
On the log in page, select the option to “Sign up now”
Verify your email and your account will be set up, allowing you to view the chapters.

Hi Mina,
The main systematic review methods guides that we constantly refer to are the Cochrane Handbook* (yes, the 2011 one) and the CRD Guidance [https://www.york.ac.uk/crd/guidance] (2009!). They both layout very basic and sensible principles of approaching, planning, conducting and reporting systematic reviews. Some of the specific methods and tools have changed a bit in that time, but these guides are still invaluable.
*In any case, the 2011 edition of the Cochrane Handbook remains the most-up-to-date version in the public domain until October 2019.

If your enquirer wants more of a how-to-search guide on a practical level, the EUnetHTA “Process of information retrieval for systematic reviews and health technology assessments on clinical effectiveness” is currently going through consultation, and will give helpful practical instructions:

For qualitative reviews: Ring N, Ritchie K, Mandava L, Jepson R. A guide to synthesising qualitative research for researchers undertaking health technology assessments and systematic reviews. Glasgow: Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS ). 2010

Lots of other SR manuals and guides exist, for example JBI & IOM, but the basic principles are explained well in good detail in the CRD & Cochrane guides.

Hope this is helpful,
Kate Misso

Subject: Cochrane Systematic Reviews handbook (interventions) - other guidance out there

Dear LIS-Med Colleagues,

Not being a registered contributor, i don’t have access to the Cochrane Systematic Reviews handbook version 6. Version 5.1 is available of course but it was published in 2011, which is arguably the dim and distant past when it comes to technology. I was wondering, therefore: what do you all use instead? Is there some other guidance out there that you’d recommend?

For context: our user is looking to do a systematic review of their own and i, a relatively new clinical librarian who’s never done one of those myself, am slightly nervous.

Unrelatedly, i hope you’ve all had an excellent weekend.

Kind regards,

Mina Krishnan
