Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I’d like to pass on your anonymised comments, if that’s ok with you, do let me know if not.
I’ve just spoken to our rep, who will pass the feedback on to his CTO. His opinion is that the setup is unlikely to change in the short term – if at all – as they are happy with their number of customers and
the usage they are receiving.
I think some coordinated contact should emphasise the importance of this issue, so do also contact your rep directly, if this is a concern for you.
Best wishes,
Ella

Hi Ella,
Strathclyde has an institutional subscription to since 2018. When we took out the sub last year we asked about Shibboleth and IP + EZproxy, and emphasised that it would be a much more suitable product for us
if these authentication methods were supported. Aside from the convenience factor of institutional login over separate login for a resource, I also flagged up that Shibboleth and EZproxy allow us more granular control to regulate access for certain user groups,
and we would better enable us to comply with the part in the Terms & Conditions stating it is our institution’s “responsibility to ensure that only staff and/or students of [our Institution] are able to access print and digital editions” of THE. Also, my
understanding is that the email addresses still function as a username on the THE site even once a user has left the institution and the email address is no longer active.
At the time we took out the subscription, Times Higher Ed said that they were aware of some of the limitations of their current authentication system and were looking at ways of improving it. I’ve emailed them
just now to ask if there have been any developments in that respect; and I’ll also reiterate that the email username + password log-in is far from ideal for us, and that for a library eResource licensed in the Higher Ed sector we would expect to see alternatives
for institutional login – for example IP and EZproxy, and Shibboleth.
Ta,
Fiona

Hi,
Another vote for Shibboleth if possible from Edge Hill. Similar to others the resource is getting some usage, but could be much better if access was easier/more consistent with other resources.

Hello
Like others who have responded to this we did ask about Shibboleth and IP access when we first subscribed to the resource in 2018.
We stated that these were our preference and would ensure greater usage as well as matching in with other resources we offer however we were told that these options were not available and were
not being considered at that time.
We are using the email address option and the site is getting usage with positive responses from academic staff but I still suspect we would have wider usage if one of the other options was available.
Kind Regards

Hi all,
We’re just setting up access to Times Higher Education (THE), and were surprised that IP and Shibboleth authentication aren’t offered. Instead, users have to register individually on THE’s platform with their university email address.
Our representative has mentioned that other universities are satisfied with this, and there are no plans to introduce other means of authentication. I just wanted to get an idea if this was still the case? If not, has anyone expressed
their dissatisfaction to THE?
Best wishes,
Ella
