The more common example down here are milestones that have been moved in road widening schemes. Slightly easier to move.

Dear Chris et al,

Your example of the pillbox in New Zealand applies in this country too, there are numerous Pickett-Hamilton Forts, Alan-Williams Turrets, Tett Turrets, and Yarnold Sangars that have been moved to museums, which should really have two related monument records.

Regards,

Pass it on to the Portable Antiquities Scheme!

Seriously, I’d have two monument records each with its excavation event and say in the text that the monument was moved. It’s not really an ‘event’ in the Monuments/Events/Sources model which explains why you can’t find a thesaurus term. If it was just a big find in an excavation that was moved to a museum no one would think twice about how to record it.

I was told by some colleagues in New Zealand once that they had a farmer who was so fed up with a pillbox on his land that he lifted into a lorry and dumped it at the museum…

Subject: Tuesday afternoon question

Hi all,

I know it’s not Friday but I have a rather strange case and I’m not sure how to add it to the HER.

Back in the 70s a kiln was excavated in Woolwich and, as the site was being redeveloped, the whole kiln (except for the stokehole) was moved. It eventually ended up in the car park of the nearby Heritage Centre and was re-excavated in 2014. I have a report detailing the removal of the kiln from its original location and I feel that this is an important element of the kiln’s history and links the two sites together. What I am unsure about is whether to create a new event record for the removal of the kiln or to simply link the two event records for the original excavation and later re-excavation to the source. If I did create a new event record for the removal, what thesaurus type do you recommend I use? I don’t think it qualifies as an excavation as it was not examining, recording or interpreting archaeological remains but I am happy to be corrected on this!

Any suggestions or recommendations (on or off list) would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Becky
