Hi Lisa

That’s really interesting to know. I shall pass this on to the enquirer too.

Best wishes

Hi Bethan,

We had our 23rd Festival of Beer and Brewing at the weekend.

Some of the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) volunteers believed that the tag was Scottish and for beer or more likely barley wine as it’s stronger. They thought EP might be Eldridge Pope but that’s on the south coast.

One of them has offered to look into it more so if I hear anything else I’ll let you know.

Thanks,

Lisa

Thanks for everyone’s help with this. Interesting to know that beer could also be an option.

Best wishes

Hi Bethan

I did check Wikipedia, and found a good section explaining the 'Shilling' system, under the 'Beer in Scotland' entry.

You do get 120/- beer, it seems!

Hi Bethan Shillings are or were, a measure of the strength of beer or ale, at least it was in Scotland in the 1970s when I was a barmaid!

I guess this object might have been a label on something like a barrel or keg rather than a 'price tag'.  But I don't know what would be 'heavy' enough, in the beer/ale sense to be '120/-'.

I haven't googled anything yet

Hello,

I've been to the Radstock Museum as they are local to where I live, (Turners Tower), to see if they knew what the price ticket below was for, and who the company was. They were unable to help and suggested I contact you.

The price tag is made of copper, 115mm by 55mm and is less than 1mm thick and was stuck on something rather than being sewn, nailed or screwed. I've tried finding the company through companies house archives but no luck. I was also wondering what may have been sold in shillings as it seems strange that they stamped out 120/- rather than £6.

I hope you may be able to shed some light on who E. P. Co. Ltd was and what they would have sold this way. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Kind Regards
