This research paper examines the nature and form of proposed innovative designs for scientific instruments submitted for the approbation of the Society of Arts.  As well as an introductory essays this volume includes a list of the premiums offered, a chronological breakdown of submissions with their evaluation and a third appendix provides an alphabetical listing of the designers – including a brief biography and information and detailed comments on the instruments submitted.
